Here are some interesting facts about Gnadenhutten, Ohio:

• 🏡 It’s Ohio’s oldest existing European settlement. Founded in 1772 by Moravian missionaries and Christian Lenape (Delaware) people, Gnadenhutten predates Ohio’s statehood by more than 30 years. 
• 🌿 Its name means “Tents (or Huts) of Grace.” The name comes from the German word Gnadenhütten, reflecting the Moravian missionaries’ faith and mission. 
• 🕊️ It has one of the most significant historic sites in Ohio. In 1782, more than 90 Christian Lenape and Mohican people, many of them women and children, were tragically killed in what became known as the Gnadenhutten Massacre. Today, the village preserves this history through monuments and a museum. 
• 👶 The first known white child born in the Ohio Territory was born here. On July 4, 1773, a baby named John Lewis Roth was born in Gnadenhutten. 
• 🛶 The Ohio & Erie Canal helped the village grow. In the 1800s, the canal brought trade, transportation, and new settlers, connecting Gnadenhutten to markets across Ohio. 
• 🏛️ You can still explore its early history today. The Gnadenhutten Historical Museum features reconstructed mission buildings, artifacts, and the memorial site honoring the original settlement and its residents.
