• 🏈 It’s one of America’s greatest high school football towns. Massillon is famous for the Massillon Washington High School Tigers football program, one of the most successful in the nation with dozens of state championships and a passionate fan base.
• 🏆 Legendary coach Paul Brown got his start here. Paul Brown coached Massillon Washington from 1932 to 1940 before founding the Cleveland Browns. The city’s Paul Brown Museum honors his legacy.
• 🚂 The Ohio & Erie Canal fueled its growth. Massillon was founded in 1826 and quickly became a thriving canal town, with trade and transportation helping it grow into an industrial center.
• 🌭 Massillon claims to have invented the shredded chicken sandwich. A longtime local favorite, this creamy, shredded chicken sandwich is a staple at community events and restaurants throughout the area.
• 🏭 It became known for steel and industry. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Massillon was home to major steel mills and manufacturing companies that helped shape the city’s economy.
• 🎨 Its downtown is full of historic charm. Downtown Massillon features beautifully preserved buildings, local shops, restaurants, and murals that celebrate the city’s history.
• 🏛️ It’s named after a French clergyman. The city was named after Jean-Baptiste Massillon, a renowned 17th- and 18th-century French bishop and preacher.
• 🤝 The Massillon–McKinley rivalry is legendary. Every football season, Massillon’s rivalry with McKinley High School in nearby Canton draws huge crowds and is considered one of the greatest high school football rivalries in the United States
