Here are some fun facts about Tuscarawas Village, Ohio:
- 🏘️ It wasn’t always called Tuscarawas. The village was originally laid out as Trenton in 1816 before its name was changed to Tuscarawas.
- 🌊 The Ohio & Erie Canal helped it grow. Although the village was founded in 1816, its population and economy really took off after the canal reached the area in the 1820s, making it easier to ship grain, coal, and other products.
- 🛶 It’s located along the Tuscarawas River. The river has played an important role in the area’s transportation, recreation, and history for centuries. Today, Snyder’s Landing offers easy access for boating and fishing.
- 🔒 You can still see a piece of canal history. Ohio & Erie Canal Lock 15 is located at the south end of the village and is one of the preserved remnants of Ohio’s historic canal system.
- 🪶 The village’s name honors Native American history. “Tuscarawas” is derived from the Tuscarora people, reflecting the region’s deep Indigenous heritage.
- 🌳 It’s known locally as “Tusky.” Residents often use the nickname “Tusky” when referring to the village, giving it a small-town identity that’s well known throughout Tuscarawas County.
