Here are some fun facts about Newcomerstown, Ohio:

• ⚾ It’s the hometown of a baseball legend. Hall of Famer Cy Young, the winningest pitcher in Major League Baseball history, was born near Newcomerstown. MLB’s annual Cy Young Award is named in his honor. 
• 🏈 A legendary football coach was born here. Woody Hayes, the iconic Ohio State football coach, was born and raised in Newcomerstown. The local museums feature memorabilia celebrating his life and career. 
• 🪶 The village has deep Native American roots. Newcomerstown is named after Chief Netawatwees (“Newcomer”), a Lenape (Delaware) leader who established a large village here in the 1760s. At its peak, the settlement was home to more than 700 Lenape people and served as an important meeting place for Native nations. 
• 🌊 Its original Lenape name meant “still water.” Before it became Newcomerstown, the area was known as Gekelukpechink, reflecting its location along the calm waters of the Tuscarawas River. 
• 🏛️ It has a one-of-a-kind museum. The Olde Main Street Museum recreates an entire early-1900s downtown indoors, complete with 23 authentic storefronts, including a soda shop, jail, hardware store, and newspaper office. 
• 🚤 The Ohio & Erie Canal helped the village thrive. During the canal era, Newcomerstown became an important transportation and trade stop, contributing to its growth in the 1800s.
